It’s about time we see Tim Tebow’s name on this list!Florida junior quarterback Tim Tebow earned the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor for his performance against Vanderbilt.
Tebow accounted for five touchdowns (3 passing and 2 rushing) in the 42-14 victory over the Commodores as the Gators secured a spot in the SEC Championship Game against Alabama. Tim played with fire and emotion. He played like he promised he would… harder then anyone else in college football.
He completed 12-of-17 passes for 171 yards and three touchdown passes (12 yards to senior Louis Murphy, 11 yards to junior Riley Cooper and 41 yards to junior David Nelson). Tebow added 88 rushing yards, a season high, on 11 carries. His 26-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the longest touchdown run of his career.
The Gators have had several honors from the SEC so far this season, but Tebow’s honor this week is the first “Offensive Player of the Week” award. Way to go Tim!
Can Tim Tebow feel pain? Or maybe he just wills himself to play through it. “He told me last year he was 100 percent before we played Georgia,” Meyer said, “and I later found out he couldn’t pick his arm up.”
After the UGA game last weekend, Tebow was seen in a boot. I was at the game and never saw Tim limping or walking funny. Once the game was over, he did his interviews and was getting the crowd pumped up. Turns out he sprained left ankle on his way to scoring 5 touchdowns.
“Playing with pain is different than playing with injuries,” Tebow said.
“You’ve got to get used to playing with pain, because that’s just part of football, and it’s something I’ve done since high school.”
One bad thing about having your star QB play with pain is you will never know if he is seriously injured.
“He’s always in the treatment room, even if he’s not hurt,” cornerback Joe Haden said. “He’ll play with a broken arm if he could. Just knowing his passion for the game, it makes me want to play harder.”
Ealier this week, it was announced that Tebo was a seminofinalst for the Davey O’Brien Award. From GatorZone.com:
The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award today announced Florida junior quarterback Tim Tebow (Jacksonville, Fla.) as one of 13 semifinalists for the 2008 O’Brien Award, presented annually to the nation’s best quarterback.
Tebow, the 2007 winner of the O’Brien Award, and the 12 other semifinalists will contend for the award until the list is narrowed to three finalists on Nov. 24. Five percent of the next round of voting lies in the The Fan Vote, which will re-open at 3 p.m. (EDT) Monday, with the voting total at zero. Gator fans can vote for Tebow once daily by visiting www.VoteOBrien.org.
There are a lot of great college QBs on the list, such as Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Chase Dnaiel, Graham Harrell and Matt Stafford. With Tebow having a “down” year and the fact that he won it last year, I’d be surprised if they awarded it to him again. Only three quaterbacks (Ty Detmer, Danny Wuerffel, and Jason White) have won it back to back.
But good luck Timmy, we’ll be sure to rally the vote!
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow scored on a pair of three-yard touchdown runs in the first half on Saturday at The Swamp to push his career total of rushing touchdowns to 36.
You know what that means? He is now tied with Emmitt Freakin’ Smith for first place in Gator history for rushing touchdowns. I bet Smith never thought his record would be broken, at least not by a quarterback. And now, if Tebow can keep things going this week against UGA, he should break the record against his arch enemy.
It’s conceivable for Tim Tebow to break the 40 rushing touchdowns mark this season, and if he comes back for his senior year he could very well break 50. I wonder what the record is for most career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback?
I just read a cool article from the LA Times about who Tim Tebow might vote for in the 2008 Heisman race. Tim won’t vote for himself, so the writer thinks that he’ll be casting a vote for Texas QB Colt McCoy.
“He’s playing extremely well and doing a great job leading his team and handles it with a lot of class, too,” Tebow said.
The article also goes on to quote Tim as saying: “I think he’s done a great job just handling everything… I was very proud because I think he represents college football really well and handled his faith extremely well, too. He is never ashamed of that, which I respect as well, so I think he is doing a great job with everything that he is going through.”
At this point, I think Colt McCoy is the clear Heisman front runner. I know Tebow said last year he wanted to get Percy Harvin a Heisman, but I’m not sure he’s playing well enough right now to warrant consideration over some of these top QBs.
As you watch Tim Tebow during Gator games, you’ve probably seen his eye black is not the same eye black that other players wear. Inscribed on Tim’s eye black are Phil (under his right eye) and 4:13 (under his left eye).
Phillippians 4:13 is a piece of scripture from the Bible. It has several translations, some of which include:
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.
I can do all these things in him who strengtheneth me.
But you can see what it pretty much means. It’s a perfectsaying for a football player with faith.
What’s your take on Tim Tebow wearing this during the games. I imagine it doesn’t bother most people, but some may see it as a way he’s differing himself from the team.
I got an email from someone at www.TimTebowSong.com asking me to check out “The Real Tim Tebow Song.” Now this is a different song then the Smilin’ Tom one I posted about a few months ago.
This new song actually comes with a video as well. It’s by the Lady Lake Boyz. You should go check it out, it’s pretty funny. The guy in the #7 jersey has some serious moves… and on a sidenote he looks very familiar to me, but I can’t place my finger on it.
Through the first four games of 2008, Tim Tebow is 62 of 102 (60.8% completion rate) for 808 yards and 6 touchdowns. He has also added 125 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns. Now, we all know that Tim Tebow couldn’t repeat his 2007 numbers and it’s safe to safe that a season like that won’t ever be repeated. But check out Tim’s stats through the first 4 games of 2007. He was 65 of 95 (68.4% completion rate) for 1096 yards and 10 touchdowns (1 interception). He also added 358 yards and 7 touchdowns rushing the ball.
His numbers really aren’t that far off from his 2007 numbers, and the first four 2008 opponents have been more difficult then 2007s. His completion rating is down some, but that’s not all his fault (Gators probably had 2-3 drops against Ole Miss alone).
My point of this post is that Tim Tebow may not be playing as bad as a lot of Gator fans think he is. He’s numbers aren’t gawdy, but they’re still good for a starting quarterback. I think he’ll pick things up over the coming weeks, and playing against a sorry Arkansas team should get them on track.
Do you think Tim Tebow is out of the Heisman race? I’ve seen several Heisman rankings and Tim’s not even Top 10 anymore. I think he may surprise people and come up from behind and make it to New York. If the Gators win out, it will be hard to keep a reigning Heisman winner out of it.
Tim Tebow will be the first to tell you that he doesn’t care about his statistics. “You think we’re playing Tennessee, and I’m worrying about how many passes I’m throwing?” Tebow said this week with a testy chuckle.
In 2007, Tebow was 45-for-61 for 835 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had 192 yards rushing on 43 attempts.
This season, the left-hander has completed 38 of 64 throws for 489 yards (almost half as many yards per completion) and five scores. He’s carried the ball 34 times for 118 yards and no scores.
The point is that the Gators are winning, and they’re winning big. Style points don’t matter as much to Coach Urban Meyer when you’re putting marks in the Win column. For teams that struggle to win big games or play in weak conferences (Texas Tech), they have to light up the scoreboard and put up monster stats for anyone to take notice.
“You’ll see them eventually,” Tebow promised. “We just beat Tennessee. I’m not complaining about anything.” I couldn’t have said it any better myself.
Ross in Gainesville called into the Jim Rome show (probably yesterday since the video was added today). He started off on a nice rant about how much Tennessee’s coach Phil Fulmer sucks. Just before the end of his call, Ross says something along the lines of “everyone in Gainesville is sporting huge Tebowners.” Then he says “I’m out” and you hear the manual buzzer. It’s so freaking hilarious.
