I live in Jacksonville, which is also where Tim Tebow is from, so there is always a huge craze about him everywhere you go. This town really loves and supports Tim. From time to time you’ll also hear a story… maybe someone saw Tim at the St. Johns Town Center or they go to church with the Tebows… Well, today I was at the gym and heard a really amazing story.
There’s a woman here in Jacksonville who is terminally ill. She is a lifelong Gator fan through and through. Unfortunately she was too frail to make it to Gainesville for the games. Knowing she didn’t have much time left, family and friends of hers were able to coordinate with UF an opportunity for Tim to sign a card for her. So while the family is in Gainesville having Tim sign the card, he asks “so where does she live?” They respond “Jacksonville”… to which Tim replies something along the lines of “oh ya? that’s where I’m from… why don’t you write down her address for me.”
Sure enough the next time Tim was in Jacksonville he stopped by to see her and talk with her. It’s amazing what Tim will do help people.
I know there are countless stories just like this one. If you’d like to share a Tim Tebow story or you have a fan letter for him, please contact us and I’ll gladly post it here.
Tim Tebow became only the third Gator to receive SEC Male Athlete of the Year Award; (Wuerffel (1996 and 1997) and Ryan Lochte (swimming, 2005) being the others. However, this is the second time Tim Tebow has won this Award. He was also named Male Athlete of the Year in 2007-2008 when he won the Heisman Trophy.
“The SEC is very proud to honor Tim and Courtney, as they are outstanding examples of what a student-athlete can accomplish, both athletically and educationally,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. “Their hard work and dedication to excellence have made them fine representatives of their universities and this conference. We congratulate them and wish them the best in their future endeavors.”
Tim Tebow completed 64.4% of his passes for 2746 yards, 30 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions in last year’s BCS Championship season. He also rushed the ball for 673 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The SEC had some really good players last year, including Matt Stafford the No.1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, Knowshon Moreno, Tyson Jackson and Andre Smith. For Tim to win the award ahead of all of them is truly amazing. Good luck in 2009-2010… maybe you can bring home a 3rd!
A new University of Florida Gator football schedule desktop wallpaper was released for download. IT features a shot of Tim Tebow holding the BCS Championship trophy. This is an awesome wallpaper and free to download. I’m linking to two different sizes, depending on your monitor.
I read an article on the Bleacher Report that listed 5 actors that could play Tim Tebow if they ever made a movie about #15. Personally, I don’t think the article listed any solid choices for Tim. Ideally, we’d like to have him play himself in a movie, but if Hollywood were to cast someone else… who would it be? Who can you see portraying Tebow? It would have to be someone big and strong… someone vocal and inspiring.
Here’s the list of five actors from the article:
- Jake Gylenhaal
- Chris Pine
- James Van Der Beek
- Channing Tatum
- Mark Paul Gosselaar
The only one of those I can see getting this role would be Chris Pine, from the new Stark Trek. I think he has the look and body build to play Tim. Other actors I would consider include: Christian Bale (might be too old), Hayden Christensen (Anakin in Star Wars) and James Franco.
Wow! Just got done reading the Sporting News and came across a Matt Hayes article where he ranks the top 25 college football players. He has some high praises for Tim Tebow that’s for sure! His rankings are based on what they do in college and nothing to do with NFL value.
Hayes ranked Tim Tebow No. 1 overall.
1. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida. I said it last year and everyone thought I was an idiot (some still do): When his career is complete, Tebow will be the greatest amateur player ever in a team sport. No one affects the game like he can.
I guess two National Championships and a Heisman will garner some high praises… but to say he’ll be the best amateur player ever in an team sport is amazing! Better then Jim Thorpe, Earl Campbell and other greats? I like it! I wonder if Matt Hayes is basing that prediction off what he thinks Tebow will do this year, or what he has already done. If Tebow didn’t play in 2009, would he still be the greatest ever?
Spring football is over. School is out and the long days of football-less summer are here. Gator fans across the globe are itching for a chance to see Tim Tebow is uniform for one more season. I found this 2009 Tebow preview video on Youtube. It’s enough to get any Tebow fan amped for opening day. Love the music too!
The focus of the Florida Gators and Tim Tebow this spring has been tweaking his throwing mechanics. It’s hard to imagine that a two-time national champion and Heisman Trophy winning quarterback would need help with his game… but to translate into an NFL quarterback, all the experts suggest Tim needs to work on his mechanics.
What Tim does right now is perfect for the college game. He’s a passing and running machine. He’s thrown for 6300+ yards and 67 touchdowns… and he rarely throws a touchdown. As much as I love Tebow, I can admit that he doesn’t throw the best spiral. He has great accuracy and the ball always gets where it’s supposed to go (Tim rarely throws an interception), it’s just that the ball wobbles on it’s way. Tim also throws the ball sidearm.
Gators quarterbacks coach Scott Loeffler has tweaked Tebow’s throwing motion, turning his sidearm delivery into an over-the-top motion. “It’s called adapting,” Florida coach Urban Meyer said. “It’s not a wholesale change, but I was concerned about it. I watched it closely. I’m always thinking, ‘If it’s not broken, don’t change it.’”
The Gators have also been working on Tim’s footwork… something he hasn’t had to worry too much about because he’s in the shotgun every play. “They said just to be myself and everything will be fine,” Tebow said. “They said not to change the things that make me who I am.”
Two things stick out in my mind that make me believe Tim will be a NFL quarterback. In the Alabama SEC Championship game he delivered a rocket pass down the sideline to Louis Murphy. Now that was an NFL throw. Another thing is the way he has stepped into the pocket to make throws. Good quarterbacks like Peyton Manning know they need to step into the pocket (even if it means they’ll meet a 320 pound DT head on) to make throws.
What do you think? Should Tim Tebow work on tweaking his throwing mechanics? Or do you like him the way he is?
There’s no denying that Tim Tebow is one of the most celebrated athletes of this generation. We’ve already seen fans in Gainesville carve a statue of him out of a tree, and we recently saw the school put up a plaque on the stadium in his honor. Well here’s some art work by Niiro Yuri, of Florida. She’s a wonderful artist and I’m glad she was able to capture Timmy in sucha unique way.
Even though I live in Jacksonville, Florida, I was unable to attend the Night of Champions event (featuring Tim Tebow) down at the Jacksonville Arena. From everything I’ve heard and read over the past few days it was a huge success. With at least 6,000 in attendance, Night of Champions raised money for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Wuerffel’s ministry, Desire Street Ministries. Special guests included ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit and Richie McDonald, former lead singer of country group Lonestar. Tebow’s brother, Robby, chairs the North Florida FCA.
Here are a couple of quotes that stuck out from the event.
“Some people feel like you have to win a Heisman Trophy to be a role model,” Wuerffel said. “But the reality is, everybody has somebody looking at you. Everybody has the ability to impact somebody else. We’re using our leverage to encourage everybody else to make a difference.”
and
“With Tim and Danny, it’s who they are,” Herbstreit said. “If they aren’t in a football uniform, that’s what they do. They aren’t at the bars, they aren’t out doing things they shouldn’t be doing. They are reading the Bible and doing a Bible study and trying to share faith with other people. I think people see that it’s authentic and genuine with them.”
If you were there and want to share some pictures or stories with us, please contact us and we’ll gladly post it.
Heisman Trophy winners Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow along with their families will be featured at a “Night of Champions” May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Arena. This is your chance to see Tim Tebow interact with people off the football field.
